OAG reach new heights with unique wine tower

OAG were asked by Edwin Shirley Staging to provide a structural solution for this most impressive 10m high glass wine tower at the new SAS Radisson Hotel, Stansted Airport.  It is only the second of its kind in the world, the first being in Las Vegas.

OAG were involved with this unique project from its concept and were committed to detailing all structural glass solutions needed in fulfilling the design intent of the wine tower enclosure.

Working closely with Solaglas, OAG engineered the supporting glass fins to be as narrow as possible whilst increasing the size of the wall panels, thus optimising the internal footprint size of the tower and limiting visual barriers.

The tower has a 4m©˜ footprint, is 10m high with over 6.5 tons of toughened laminated glass used in its construction.

It consists of eight 10m high split fins made from 19mm toughened glass, which span from structural steelwork at the head and base. 13.5mm thick toughened laminate glass panels are held together using bolted point fixings to maintain both integrity and aesthetic form.

The tower contains a full height temperature controlled wine rack which holds up to 4,000 bottles. Hotel guests select the wine of their choice and watch whilst the flying ‘Wine Angels’ deliver their order and perform acrobatics suspended by an electronically operated wire and pulley system.
