St Pancras International Station

St Pancras International forms the London Terminus to the new high speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The project combines new build using 21st century engineering techniques with the refurbishment of the inspiring 19th Century Barlow Shed to create a stunning welcome to the capital.

Designer's Comments

The retail areas within St Pancras International Station are predominantly loacted within the lower levels of the station building. Known as the undercroft, this area was cleared and deepened as part of the station refurbishment.

St Pancras International Station

Large openings in the concourse level above flood the area with natural light. The combination of old and new structures has created a structure with simultaneous movements in all planes, especially when there is train activity above.

The solution for this complicated problem, was the construction of free standing glass shopfronts. Using complicated 3D laser surveying techniques, to locate every relevant beam and rivet, the facade glass, and supporting cantilevered fins were detailed by our team of in-house CAD designers.

The fast-track programme did not allow us the luxury of site measurement or templates, and thanks to these techniques, it was not necessary.

Project Manager's Comments

The hand over from Main station to Retail fit out was delayed resulting in 2000m2 of bolted glass being installed in a 6 month period whilst having to accommodate a constantly dropping floor level against a visual requirement for all bolt fixings to remain a constant measurement from the finished floor levels.

St Pancras Retail Area

Since the design was free standing, there was a minimum allowable open free area to accommodate movements but we could not contravene the strict smoke management regime meaning our installation tolerances were extremely tight. Due to the external nature of the station concourse, previously specified fittings could not be used and we manufactured bespoke fittings within the same period.
