Project Story
Combining wood, glass and aluminium framing, this atrium has a beautiful, warm overall finish.
The refurbishment of the atrium area in 160 Great Portland Street, with the extra warmth of the wooden details on the spandrels, has resulted in a stunning example of glass architecture that goes against the grain of recent glazing trends.
Instead of going for minimal structure, the architects wanted a visible framing system to be part of the project’s look and feel. We ordered Schueco aluminium frames and at the time it was the largest project the German company had completed in the UK.
To carry out the installation, we inserted six-storey scaffolding into the atrium space and because it was a refit, we had to explore the structure behind the spandrels and work out how best to fit the framing and the glass.
