Ascot Racecourse

2.2km of internal glass balustrades along the edges of the internal, tiered galleria, with its arc-shaped layout and linking bridges.

Project Story

A visit to Ascot is an unforgettable experience and not just because of the horses or the ladies’ hats on display. In 2006, the redeveloped grandstand was unveiled. From the outside, it has an impressive overall design and impressive galleria and walkways inside.

We designed, manufactured and installed 2.2km of internal glass balustrades along the edges of the internal, tiered galleria, with its arc-shaped layout and linking bridges.

With large numbers of people moving through the building whenever it hosts an event, one of the main challenges we faced was meeting the specified load barrier of 3.0KN/m along the balustrades.

Due to the unusual junctions and corner details in the design, more than one third of the glass panels had to be made from non-standard templates.

Project Story Continued

To install the balustrades, some of which are at a significant height so we used a leading edge protection system with strict controls and procedures for both health and safety and in the handling of the glass.

The aerofoil-shaped hardwood handrails that we installed along the balustrades give the work a beautiful finishing touch.
