Grand Buildings

Curves, corners, and a flood of natural light – at Grand Buildings our work was light on structure and heavy on beauty.

Project Story

Curves, corners, and a flood of natural light – at Grand Buildings our work was light on structure and heavy on beauty.

The new atrium in Grand Buildings on Trafalgar Square is an architectural marvel. Triangular in shape, it has one right-angle corner, one tightly curved corner, while the third is smoothly rounded. Day or night, the glass form plays with the light brilliantly, making the work even more impressive.

To expand square footage, the building’s owner extended each level two metres out into the atrium space and we were called on to design and fit an atrium lining enclosing the building’s structural columns while still flooding the office areas with light.

Project Story Continued

We worked closely with the metal contractors who carried out the extensions, ensuring we could secure the framing to the narrow profile floors. The architects wanted minimal structure supporting the glass, so thin upright mullions alternate with silicone seals. Meanwhile very narrow aluminium spandrels line the horizontal floor edges.

The first level of the atrium offers an open balcony with structural balustrading – no handrail. Whilst levels two to six of the atrium use full-height curtain wall glazing. We also installed a glazed entranceway with revolving doors.
