Project Story
Originally built in 1988, the building was wholly occupied by RBS until British Land commenced redevelopment in June 2017. The redevelopment included refurbishing the interior, improving connectivity with the street, installing terraces & green spaces and expanding the retail provision.
Just a short walk from Liverpool Street Station and accessible from both Bishopsgate and Exchange Square, the building provides more than 280,000 sqft of creative workspaces which will be home to businesses including McCann Worldgroup and Mimecast. It also became home to Italian marketplace Eataly’s first UK location in April 2021 – the largest stand-alone food hall in the country.
We were engaged early in the design process, working alongside the architects and main contractor to provide samples of glass and ironmongery along with a scaled visual mock-up of the ‘Feature Portal Cladding’ for the east elevation.
As well as the eye catching blackened stainless-steel portal with a debossed pattern on the east elevation, we designed, supplied and installed a number of structural glazing and cladding elements to form the new retail and office area.
This included a bespoke steel, flush glazed system, working with a specialist company for the façades to the ground and first floor, East and South elevations, and to the first and second floors on the Great Eastern Walkway; plus various entrances, doors, screens and balustrades as shown below:
- Two office main entrances and the retail main entrance complete with revolving doors and pass doors
- Two draught lobbies to retail areas as well as multiple automated and bifold doors to retail areas
- OAG Fortiglaze fire rated screens across 12 floors, within the lift lobbies and on the 1st floor reception
- Eurobond firemaster insulated wall and ceiling panels of various sizes with 120 minutes fire integrity and insulation
- Fire rated windows and doors with 30 minutes fire integrity
- The 1st floor balustrade
- Two 5m terrace bifold door screens on level 8
- One 13m terrace bifold door screen on level 10
- One 5m terrace screen on level 7
- Three plant room screens on levels 8 and 10
- Bespoke louvered screens on the ground and 1st Floor
- Bespoke louvered service road gates with cyclist entrance door
- Control room within the service road.

We are proud to have worked on such an iconic building and are pleased to announce that we have also been awarded the redevelopment of 155 Bishopsgate.

As with all our jobs, the quality assurance on this project was tightly monitored throughout. We had skilled management on site and our own health & safety team carried audits every 2 weeks. British Land carried out their own audits each month, reviewing the installed works and any works in progress.
We produced custom-made laser welded steel curtain wall sections to ensure that the seams were neat and barely noticeable, and that the contour of the steel shape would be maintained with minimal distortion and stress.
To create the specific blackened stainless-steel panels for the portal, we worked with Christian Pohl. The whole team went to great lengths to achieve the desired finish and colour.
