The Glass Atrium That Transformed a Heritage Icon

OAG’s work on The Northcliffe building in central London highlights the power of a modern glass atrium to transform a historic structure from within – both visually and functionally. This sensitive redevelopment of a Grade II listed landmark showcases how expertly engineered glazing can honour architectural heritage while delivering contemporary performance.

At the heart of the project is a dramatic, fully glazed atrium structure that now defines the interior experience of The Northcliffe. Flooded with natural light from above, the glass atrium spans a vast internal void, connecting multiple floorplates and creating a sense of openness that reimagines the building’s original layout.

A Light-Filled Glass Atrium in a Heritage Setting

OAG designed and installed the entire glass atrium system, including the expansive roof glazing, projecting glass pods, and glazed balconies. Every element was custom-engineered to fit the existing framework and to comply with conservation guidelines.

The design was carefully developed in collaboration with architects and heritage specialists to ensure that the new glazing respected the proportions and character of the original façade. The result is an atrium that enhances the building’s spatial quality while remaining discreet and elegant from the exterior.

Engineering a Modern Glass Atrium for Daylight and Comfort

More than just an architectural statement, the glass atrium delivers measurable performance benefits:

Daylight penetration into deep floorplates
High thermal insulation for year-round comfort
Strong acoustic performance suited to office use
Seamless integration with curtain walling and rainscreen cladding systems

The glazing was fabricated and installed with extreme precision, ensuring structural integrity and visual consistency across the large roof span. Slimline profiles, bespoke fixings, and modern materials work together to form a clean, contemporary interior that supports flexible working and enhances user wellbeing.

By Day and Night: A Dynamic Architectural Centrepiece

During daylight hours, the glass atrium fills the internal spaces with light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and creating a calm, welcoming atmosphere. By night, the fully glazed canopy transforms into a glowing architectural feature – a beacon of regeneration that is visible across the London skyline.

Drone footage of the completed building reveals the scale and complexity of the atrium, as well as the fine detailing involved in delivering such a sophisticated structure. From glazed balconies to projecting pods and curtain walling, the project showcases OAG’s expertise in layering glass elements to produce cohesive, high-performance results.
