Canary Wharf is the first crossrail station to be completed and one of the largest. Like the nearby Canary Wharf Tube station, the new Crossrail station has been built in dock water area, in this case the North Dock of West India Quay. The station, retail and park areas are six storeys high; approximately the size of One Canada Square laid on its side.
The station box was designed and constructed on behalf of Crossrail by Canary Wharf Contractors Limited. It was built for a fixed price of £500m, of which Canary Wharf Group is contributing £150m.
Canary Wharf Group has now completed construction of the Crossrail Canary Wharf station and handed over the ticket hall and platform levels to Crossrail Limited for fit-out.
Crossrail will now start the complicated process of fitting out the station with all the systems needed to operate passenger services, including communications equipment, signalling, tunnel ventilation, platform screen doors and overhead line equipment.
We were awarded the £1.8M retail glazing package following the demise of the incumbent contractor. This meant that a full materials and works progress audit had to be carried out and a revised programme developed and agreed with the main contractor Canary Wharf Group, before work could commence with us as the new specialist glazing contractor.
Despite delays caused by the demise of the original specialist sub-contractor, we were able to undertake the full scope of retail glazing, balustrade and wall lining, completing on time and to the agreed budget, whilst maintaining high standards of finish throughout.
